Today my cousin Michel in France sent me this document from The Charente-Maritime Archive in La Rochelle. He and his wife spent a great deal of time and effort to find it, and I can't thank them enough. Researching legal and notarial documents in France is quite difficult. We had a case number and the name of the notary, still it took him hours to find the document on Guillaume de Moucheron and his wife Henriette Le Court.
Essentially Guillaume and his wife Henriette were being sued by a wine merchant named Giraudin for the non-payment of a wine delivery, two years after the fact. The delivery was 28 Oct 1654 and this court document dates from 1656. The cost was 273 Livres....
my cousin Michel translated part of the document : (I quote his email)
Line 1 : "Maître Georges Reveau, conseiller et avocat du Roi ...."
Line 2 : "en paiement de la somme de deux cent soixante douze livres ..." (in payment of the sum of 272 pounds)
Line 3 : "livraison du vin ..." (wine delivery)
Line 4 : " ... Guillaume de Moucheron et Henriette Lecourt sa femme ..."
Line 7 : "... marchand de vin ... "(wine merchant)
Line 8 : "vingt-huit octobre mil six cent cinquante quatre ..." (28 Oct 1654)
Line 9 : "... la somme de deux cent soixante douze livres..." (sum of 272 pounds)
Apart from this fascinating document concerning our ancestor.. we also learn that at the time of the delivery (and also at the time of the document) Guillaume and his wife Henriette resided in the village of St.-Martin-de-Re (Saint Martin isle de Re). This explains why the protestant registers of La Rochelle are silent in regards to Guillaume and his family before 1660. It also tells us that they were married previous to/or around the date of 28 October 1654. Could this have been for his wedding celebration? I believe it probably was. Unfortunately the Protestant registers of St. Martin are far from complete and only a very sketchy transcription for this period exists. (My next post will show exactly the lack of detail these extracts contain).
